Ihr Baudatum ist unbekannt. Im Jahr 1353 wird die Burg als Teil der Grafschaft Bitche erwähnt
Einige Jahre später wurde die Burg Rothenburg von der Straßburger Miliz verwüstet, da sie zu einem Versteck von Raubrittern geworden war. Im 16. Jahrhundert wird sie wie folgt beschrieben: "ein altes, kleines, ruiniertes Schloss".
Sie blieb es auch.
