Die Rue de la Cité, ex Via d'Agrippa, befindet sich im Stadtteil La Cité, genauer gesagt im befestigten Teil der gallorömischen Stadt Augustobona Tricassium (das Castrum), deren Stadtmauer in der zweiten Hälfte des 3. Jh. n. Chr. zum Schutz vor germanischen Invasionen errichtet wurde. Da Stein in der Gegend knapp ist, wurde der Stein der römischen Gebäude wiederverwendet, um einen quadratischen Wall von ca. 400 m Platz zu bauen. Diese Mauern beherbergen das christliche Herz der Stadt, sowie das Schloss der ersten Grafen der Champagne (heutige Lage der Place de la Tour). Die Stadt wird von Osten nach Westen vom Decumanus Maximus (heute rue de la Cité, dessen Niveau 3 m höher ist als damals) und von Norden nach Süden vom Cardo Maximus (heute rue de la Tour und rue Boucherat) durchquert.
