La Rue de la Cité, già Via Agrippa, si trova nel quartiere della Cité, più precisamente nella parte fortificata della città gallo-romana di Augustobona Tricassium (il castrum), il cui bastione fu costruito nella seconda metà del III secolo d.C. per proteggere la città dalle invasioni germaniche. Poiché la pietra scarseggiava nella regione, quella proveniente dagli edifici romani fu riutilizzata per costruire un muro quadrato di circa 400 m per lato. Queste mura ospitano il cuore cristiano della città e il castello dei primi conti di Champagne (l'attuale Place de la Tour). La città è attraversata da est a ovest dal decumano massimo (l'attuale rue de la Cité, il cui livello è più alto di 3 metri) e da nord a sud dal cardo massimo (le attuali rue de la Tour e rue Boucherat).
