De Rue de la Cité, ex Via d'Agrippa, ligt in de wijk La Cité, meer bepaald in het versterkte deel van de Gallo-Romeinse stad Augustobona Tricassium (het castrum), waarvan de vestingwal in de tweede helft van de 3e eeuw na Christus werd gebouwd om de stad te beschermen tegen Germaanse invasies. Omdat steen schaars is in het gebied, werd de steen van de Romeinse gebouwen hergebruikt voor de bouw van een vierkante wal van ongeveer 400 m. Deze muren herbergen het christelijke hart van de stad, evenals het kasteel van de eerste graven van Champagne (huidige plaats van de Place de la Tour). De stad wordt van oost naar west doorkruist door de decumanus maximus (nu rue de la Cité, waarvan het niveau 3 m hoger ligt dan toen) en van noord naar zuid door de cardo maximus (nu rue de la Tour en rue Boucherat).
