Die Burg steht am Ende eines Felsplateaus, das dank eines natürlichen Grabenbruchs einen Sporn bildet. Sie dominiert das sogenannte Vier-Flüsse-Land und war der Sitz einer wichtigen Baronie aus der karolingischen Aristokratie von Quercy - der Familie Castelnau de Bretenoux -, die bereits im 11. Jahrhundert eine befestigte Residenz in der Umgebung besaß. Im Laufe des 14. und 15. Jahrhunderts nahm die Burg ihre endgültige Gestalt an. Die Familie de Clermont-Lodève, die die Baronie 1530 geerbt hatte, unternahm Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts umfangreiche Verschönerungsarbeiten an dem strengen Schloss. Die Burg ist eines der schönsten Beispiele für die Militärarchitektur des Mittelalters.
