Il castello sorge all'estremità di un altopiano roccioso che forma uno sperone grazie alla presenza di una faglia naturale. Dominando l'area conosciuta come i Quattro Fiumi, era la sede di un'importante baronia dell'aristocrazia carolingia del Quercy - la famiglia Castelnau de Bretenoux - che già nell'XI secolo aveva una residenza fortificata nella zona. Nel corso dei secoli XIV e XV il castello assunse la sua configurazione definitiva. La famiglia Clermont-Lodève, che ereditò la baronia nel 1530, intraprese importanti lavori di abbellimento dell'austero castello a metà del XVII secolo. Il castello è uno dei migliori esempi di architettura militare medievale.
