El castillo se encuentra al final de una meseta rocosa que forma un espolón gracias a la presencia de una falla natural. Dominando la zona conocida como los Cuatro Ríos, fue la sede de una importante baronía de la aristocracia carolingia de Quercy -la familia Castelnau de Bretenoux- que ya tenía una residencia fortificada en la zona en el siglo XI. Durante los siglos XIV y XV, el castillo adquirió su configuración definitiva. La familia Clermont-Lodève, que heredó la baronía en 1530, emprendió importantes obras de embellecimiento del austero castillo a mediados del siglo XVII. El castillo es uno de los mejores ejemplos de arquitectura militar medieval.
