Die erste Abtei Saint-Paul wurde im 10. Jahrhundert außerhalb der Stadtmauern an der Stelle errichtet, wo der sechste Bischof von Verdun, Paul, begraben worden war.
Jahrhundert von den auf ihren Bischof wütenden Verduner Bürgern zerstört und 1552 auf Befehl des französischen Königs abgerissen wurde, wurde sie um 1560 an der heutigen Stelle wieder aufgebaut und im 18. Jahrhundert zum dritten Mal umgebaut. Die Unterpräfektur und das Amtsgericht von Verdun teilen sich derzeit die Räumlichkeiten der ehemaligen Abtei.
