La primera abadía de San Pablo se construyó en el siglo X fuera de las murallas, en el lugar donde fue enterrado el sexto obispo de Verdún, Pablo.
Destruida en el siglo XIII por los ciudadanos de Verdún, enfadados con su obispo, y demolida en 1552 por orden del rey de Francia, fue reconstruida en su emplazamiento actual hacia 1560, y rediseñada por tercera vez en el siglo XVIII. La Subprefectura y el Tribunal de Primera Instancia de Verdún comparten actualmente los locales de la antigua abadía.
NOTA: la procura de la abadía de Saint-Paul se ha convertido en el Hôtel de la Cloche d'Or.
