La première abbaye Saint-Paul fut édifiée au 10ème siècle à l’extérieur des remparts, à l’endroit où le 6ème évêque de Verdun, Paul, avait été enterré.
Détruite au 13ème siècle par les bourgeois verdunois en colère contre leur évêque, puis démolie en 1552 par ordre du Roi de France, elle fut reconstruite à l’emplacement actuel vers 1560, puis remaniée pour la troisième fois au 18ème siècle. La Sous-Préfecture et le Tribunal d’Instance de Verdun se partagent actuellement les locaux de l’ancienne abbaye.
A NOTER : la procure de l’abbaye Saint-Paul est devenue l’hôtel de la Cloche d’Or.
