Im Mittelalter war die Stadt vollständig von Stadtmauern umgeben. Sie wurden von Jean d'Apremont, dem Bischof von Metz, um 1256 errichtet. Die Stadtmauer mit einem Umfang von 1670 m wurde von achtundzwanzig Türmen flankiert. Heute sind noch Teile der Stadtmauer am oberen Ende des Parc de la Liberté sowie Türme und zugeschüttete Gräben in der Avenue Poincaré und der Avenue Clémenceau erhalten. Vor den Wällen des Parc de la Liberté befinden sich Hausstelen, römische Grabdenkmäler, die vom Friedhof Freiwald (Gemeinde Troisfontaines) stammen.
