Nel Medioevo, la città era interamente circondata da bastioni. Furono eretti da Jean d'Apremont, vescovo di Metz, intorno al 1256. I bastioni avevano un perimetro di 1670 m ed erano fiancheggiati da ventotto torri. Oggi, alcune parti dei bastioni rimangono in cima al Parc de la Liberté, insieme a torri e fossati riempiti sui viali Poincaré e Clémenceau. Davanti ai bastioni del Parc de la Liberté si trovano le stele, monumenti funerari romani provenienti dal cimitero di Freiwald (comune di Troisfontaines).
24/12/2024: In seguito al crollo di una parte del bastione, questo è stato messo in sicurezza con delle barriere. Si prega di non attraversarle.
