Au Moyen-Age, la ville était entièrement entourée de remparts. Ils ont été érigés par Jean d'Apremont, évêque de Metz, vers 1256. Le rempart, d'un périmètre de 1670m, était flanqué de vingt-huit tours. Aujourd'hui, il reste des éléments des remparts en haut du Parc de la Liberté, ainsi que des tours et des fossés comblés, avenues Poincaré et Clémenceau. Devant les remparts du Parc de la Liberté se trouvent des stèles-maisons, monuments funéraires romains, provenant du cimetière du Freiwald (commune de Troisfontaines).
24/12/2024 : Suite à l'effondrement d'une partie du rempart, celui-ci a été mis en sécurité au moyen de barrières. Merci de ne pas les franchir.
