Diese Statue, die dem General des Kaiserreichs Jean Rapp (1771-1821) gewidmet ist, ist das erste öffentliche Denkmal von Auguste Bartholdi, der erst zwanzig Jahre alt war, als er sie 1854 fertigstellte. Ursprünglich wurde sie auf den Champs-Elysées in Paris aufgestellt und auf der Weltausstellung 1855 präsentiert, bevor sie 1856 nach Colmar verlegt wurde. Die kolossale Bronzestatue wurde 1940 von den Nazi-Besatzern abgeschossen. Nach dem Krieg wurde sie restauriert und 1948 auf einem originalgetreuen Sockel wieder aufgestellt. Heute dominiert sie den gleichnamigen Platz, der seit dem Sommer 2000 umgestaltet und von Autos befreit wurde.
