Questa statua, dedicata al generale dell'Impero Jean Rapp (1771-1821), è il primo monumento pubblico di Auguste Bartholdi, che aveva solo vent'anni quando la realizzò nel 1854. Inizialmente fu esposto sugli Champs-Elysées a Parigi e presentato all'Esposizione Universale del 1855, prima di essere trasferito a Colmar nel 1856. Questa colossale statua di bronzo fu abbattuta dagli occupanti nazisti nel 1940. Restaurata dopo la guerra, fu rimessa su una base identica nel 1948. Oggi domina l'omonima piazza, che dall'estate del 2000 è stata ridisegnata e liberata dalle auto.
