Esta estatua, dedicada al general del Imperio Jean Rapp (1771-1821), es el primer monumento público de Auguste Bartholdi, que sólo tenía veinte años cuando la creó en 1854. Originalmente se expuso en los Campos Elíseos de París y se mostró en la Exposición Universal de 1855, antes de ser trasladada a Colmar en 1856. Esta colosal estatua de bronce fue derribada por los ocupantes nazis en 1940. Restaurado después de la guerra, se volvió a colocar en una base idéntica en 1948. Hoy domina la plaza homónima, que ha sido rediseñada y despejada de coches desde el verano de 2000.
