Laut einer Urkunde, die Kaiser Heinrich V. 1106 in SPEYER ausstellte, lautete die alte Bezeichnung GREWENBACH. Die ersten Ölbohrungen durch die Gesellschaft Bonne Espérance erfolgten 1891, der Bau der Raffinerie 1903, die Genehmigung zur Ölförderung durch die Deutsche Tiefbohr Aktiengesellschaft in Berlin 1908, gefolgt vom Bau einer Paraffinfabrik. Die Minen und Mineralölwerke in MERKWILLER werden für 99 Jahre Pächter.
