Ursprünglich gab es nur eine kleine Öffnung in der Höhe einer Stadtmauer, durch die die Abwasserkanäle an der Mauer entlang nach unten in den Hafen liefen. Als 1849 aus hygienischen Gründen ein Abwassersystem eingeführt wurde, wurde die Mauer durchbrochen. Außerdem wurde eine Treppe gebaut, die eine Verbindung zwischen den beiden Teilen der Stadt herstellen sollte.
