Pater Armand David war einer der ersten Entdecker Chinas für den Westen. Der Lazaristenmissionar leistete einen großen Beitrag zur naturalistischen Wissenschaftsbewegung des 19. Jahrhunderts.
Durch seine Expeditionen nach China konnte er ganz Europa mit bis dahin unbekannten Tierarten wie dem Panda oder dem Hirsch von Pater Armand David sowie mit neuen Baumarten wie dem Buddleia (Schmetterlingsbaum) oder dem Davidia Involucrata (Taschentuchbaum) bekannt machen.
