Die schreckliche Schlacht am Donon, die am 20. und 21. August 1914 stattfand, markierte den Beginn des französischen Rückzugs. Während des zwölfstündigen Gefechts, das von intensivem Artilleriefeuer und Bajonettangriffen geprägt war, lagen zwischen 500 und 2.000 Tote an den Hängen des Donon.
Im Jahr 1916 errichteten die deutschen Behörden etwa 180 Stelen aus rosafarbenem Sandstein, die die 1914 aufgestellten Holzkreuze ersetzten und zum Gedenken an die französischen und deutschen Soldaten, die hier ihr Leben verloren, eingraviert wurden. Der Petit Donon, einst ein Schlachtfeld, wurde zu einer Nekropole unter freiem Himmel für Soldaten beider Seiten.
