La terrible batalla del Donon, que tuvo lugar los días 20 y 21 de agosto de 1914, marcó el inicio de la retirada francesa. Durante este enfrentamiento, que duró 12 horas y estuvo marcado por intensos intercambios de fuego de artillería y ataques a bayoneta, entre 500 y 2.000 muertos yacían en las laderas del Donon.
En 1916, las autoridades alemanas erigieron unas 180 estelas de arenisca rosa en sustitución de las cruces de madera colocadas allí en 1914, grabadas en memoria de los soldados franceses y alemanes que perdieron la vida aquí. El Petit Donon, antaño campo de batalla, se ha convertido en una necrópolis al aire libre para los soldados de ambos bandos.
