La terribile battaglia del Donon, svoltasi il 20 e 21 agosto 1914, segnò l'inizio della ritirata francese. Durante questo scontro, durato 12 ore e caratterizzato da intensi scambi di fuoco d'artiglieria e attacchi alla baionetta, tra i 500 e i 2.000 morti giacciono sulle pendici del Donon.
Nel 1916, le autorità tedesche eressero circa 180 stele di arenaria rosa in sostituzione delle croci di legno collocate nel 1914, incise in memoria dei soldati francesi e tedeschi che persero la vita qui. Il Petit Donon, un tempo campo di battaglia, è diventato una necropoli a cielo aperto per i soldati di entrambe le parti.
