Der Donjon, das Wahrzeichen der Stadt Niort, ist der letzte Zeuge eines großen Festungskomplexes, zu dem auch eine fast 2700 Meter lange Stadtmauer gehört. Der Donjon ist seit 1840 ein historisches Monument und trägt das Gütesiegel Musée de France. Das Musée du Donjon beherbergt archäologische und ethnografische Sammlungen aus der Region sowie eine Ausstellung, die die Geschichte des Monuments anhand einer modernen Szenografie nachzeichnet.
