Der Ortsname 'Friskney' wird erstmals im Domesday Book von 1086 erwähnt, wo er als Frischenei erscheint. Er wird um 1115 als Freschena und um 1150 als Freschenei aufgezeichnet. Der Name ist nordisch und bedeutet 'Süßwasserinsel'.
