Die Geschichte des Ortes geht auf das 11. Jahrhundert zurück, als Wikinger den Ort wegen seiner Anlegemöglichkeiten besiedelten. Der in viktorianischer Zeit entstandene, am Ärmelkanal liegende Seehafen Shoreham Harbour ist ein großer Wirtschaftsfaktor des Ortes, dort befinden sich auch zahlreiche Werften.
