Aus der Sicht der abchasischen Regierung und Russlands ist Sochumi die Hauptstadt der international nur von wenigen Staaten anerkannten Republik Abchasien, de jure wird sie vom Großteil der UN-Mitgliedsstaaten weiterhin als Hauptstadt der Autonomen Republik Abchasien innerhalb Georgiens gesehen. Georgien übt seit 1993 jedoch keine Souveränität über Abchasien aus.
Die Stadt liegt in der Mitte Abchasiens direkt am Schwarzen Meer. Sie ist ein bedeutender Hafen, ein Eisenbahnknotenpunkt und dank ihres milden Klimas wichtiger Kurort und Touristenziel. Ihre Schwefelbäder sind bereits zu Zeiten der Römer genutzt worden.
