Die Passatwinde waren für Athen von großer Bedeutung. Noch heute kann man dies am gut erhaltenen Gebäude mit seiner achteckigen Form erkennen, das auf die 8 Himmelsrichtungen verweist: der Turm der Winde. Eine bronzene Wetterfahne in Form von Triton zeigte die Richtung des Windes an. Jede der Richtungen ist durch ein Flachrelief gekennzeichnet. Am Fuß des Flachreliefs befand sich eine Sonnenuhr zur Zeitangabe. Im Inneren gab es eine geniale Wasseruhr, die die Zeit angab, wenn es bewölkt war oder in der Nacht.
Diese Winde waren entscheidend für die Navigation und damit entscheidend für den internationalen Handel mit den Märkten des Mittelmeers.
