I venti alisei erano molto importanti per Atene. Si può ancora vedere questo dal ben conservato edificio con la sua forma ottagonale, che si riferisce alle 8 direzioni: la Torre dei Venti. Un vento bronzeo a forma di Tritone mostrava la direzione del vento. Ognuna delle direzioni è indicata da un bassorilievo. In fondo al bassorilievo c'era un orologio solare per indicare il tempo. All'interno c'era un ingegnoso orologio ad acqua per indicare il tempo quando c'era nuvole o durante la notte.
Quei venti erano essenziali per la navigazione e quindi essenziali per il commercio internazionale con i mercati del Mediterraneo.
