Les alizés étaient très importants pour Athènes. Vous pouvez encore le voir à partir du bâtiment bien conservé avec sa forme octogonale, faisant référence aux 8 directions : la Tour des Vents. Une girouette en bronze sous la forme de Triton montrait la direction du vent. Chacune des directions est indiquée par un bas-relief. Au bas du bas-relief se trouvait une horloge solaire pour indiquer l'heure. À l'intérieur se trouvait une horloge à eau ingénieuse pour indiquer l'heure lorsque le ciel était couvert ou pendant la nuit.
Ces vents étaient essentiels pour la navigation et donc essentiels pour le commerce international avec les marchés de la Méditerranée.
