Der Tempel des Apollo, Gott der Musik, Harmonie, Licht, Heilung und Orakel, nahm die wichtigste und herausragendste Position im delphischen panhellenischen Heiligtum ein. Das Bauwerk mit der heute sichtbar teilweise restaurierten Säulenhalle stammt aus dem 20. Jahrhundert v. Chr. und wurde laut antiken Berichten im Laufe der Geschichte fünf verschiedene Tempel errichtet. Das berühmte Orakel, die Pythia, wirkte im Inneren des Tempels, dessen Standort nach einer Tradition aufgrund eines heiligen Abgrunds unter dem Ort gewählt wurde, der Dämpfe ausstieß, die von der Pythia eingeatmet wurden.
