Der moderne Name von Porto Heli bedeutet 'Bucht der Aale'. Eine offensichtliche Theorie besagt, dass Aale vor vielen Jahren das Rückgrat der Fischereiindustrie waren. Aber andere Theorien besagen, dass der Name Heli aus einer allmählichen sprachlichen Verfälschung des Namens "Alies" oder "Halieis" stammt, der antiken Stadt, die sich an der südöstlichen Seite des Hafens befindet. Die Stadt Halieis ist jetzt zur Hälfte im Meer versunken.
