Der Berg Athos ist eine orthodoxe Mönchsrepublik mit autonomem Status unter griechischer Souveränität in Griechenland.
Der Athos befindet sich auf dem gleichnamigen östlichen Finger der Halbinsel Chalkidikí in der Region Zentralmakedonien. Das Territorium misst 43 Kilometer von Nordwest nach Südost und umfasst rund 336 km²; es zählt 1811 Einwohner zuzüglich Verwaltungsangestellten, Polizisten, Geschäftsbesitzern und einer saisonal wechselnden Zahl von zivilen Arbeitern. Im allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch steht der Begriff „ Athos“ entweder für die ganze Halbinsel Athos mit dem Mönchsstaat oder auch nur für den eigentlichen Berg an der Südost-Spitze der Halbinsel, der 2033 Meter hoch ist.
