Im Mittelalter wuchs Oitylo zur wichtigsten Stadt in der messinischen Mani. Die einzige Stadt in Mani, die Oitylo in der Anzahl der Piraten Konkurrenz machte, war Skoutari. Deshalb wurde hier von den Türken eine große Festung errichtet.
