Nyíregyháza ist der Sitz des Komitats Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg im Nordosten Ungarns. Die Stadt mit Komitatsrecht hat ca. 120.000 Einwohner und ist damit die siebtgrößte Stadt des Landes. In Nyíregyháza gibt es eine griechisch-katholische Hochschule . Die Stadt war lange die größte ungarische Stadt ohne Universität. Seit 1. Januar 2016 firmiert die Hochschule Nyíregyháza als Universität Nyíregyháza.
