Viele Orte sind nach dem beliebtesten Heiligen des Landes benannt. Der wichtigste davon ist Croagh Patrick, ein 764 Meter hoher Berg, ein steinerner Buckel, im Westen Irlands (Grafschaft Mayo). Hier soll laut der populären Überlieferung Saint Patrick vierzig Tage und Nächte gefastet haben. Tausende Pilger gedenken daran noch jedes Jahr am Reek Sunday, dem letzten Sonntag im Juli, wenn sie zum Teil barfuß den Gipfel erklimmen. Ich habe den Aufstieg selbst gemacht und verstehe seitdem, wie schwer und ermüdend er ist, aber auch wie schön die Belohnung für die Mühe ist. Oben angekommen hat man einen atemberaubenden Blick über den Westen Irlands und über den Ozean.
