Die Medici-Festung von Volterra wurde auf dem höchsten Punkt des Hügels errichtet, auf dem sich die Stadt befindet: Von außen sieht sie wirklich majestätisch und imposant aus.

Die Struktur besteht aus zwei Gebäuden, die durch hohe Verteidigungsmauern verbunden sind: die Rocca Vecchia, auch bekannt als Cassero, die 1342 vom Herzog von Athen, Gualtieri VI. von Brienne, Gouverneur von Florenz, erbaut und von Lorenzo dem Prächtigen umgebaut wurde, und die Rocca Nuova, bekannt als Il Mastio, erbaut von Lorenzo dem Prächtigen selbst zwischen 1472 und 1474.

Heute wird das Gebäude als Staatsgefängnis mittlerer Sicherheit genutzt, das nicht zugänglich ist und nicht besichtigt werden kann.
