Ursprünglich als Schloss entstanden, ein Verteidigungsbollwerk der Republik Siena auf der Montagnola Senese, wurde es im 16. Jahrhundert auf Initiative des Eigentümers Mino Celsi in eine Residenz umgewandelt. Von dieser senesischen Familie, die frühzeitig ausstarb, stammt wahrscheinlich auch sein Name. Die restauratorischen Arbeiten aus dem 16. Jahrhundert sind sicherlich dem Architekten Baldassarre Peruzzi zuzuschreiben, da es eine Zeichnung gibt, die die runde Kapelle und die Anordnung der Terrassenmauern beschreibt. Die Architektur des Innenhofs weist außerdem die typischen Merkmale der Werke von Peruzzi auf.
