Das Schloss Pettingen liegt südwestlich des Dorfes Pettingen, etwa 4 km nördlich der Gemeinde Mersch im Zentrum Luxemburgs. Es ist eine der am besten erhaltenen befestigten Burgen des Landes.
Im zehnten Jahrhundert war die Festung als "Pittigero Mazini" bekannt, wurde aber im dreizehnten Jahrhundert Pettingen genannt. Gegen Ende des Mittelalters waren die Herren von Pettingen wichtige Mitglieder der luxemburgischen Gesellschaft. Sie waren bei der Hochzeit von Ermesinda I. von Luxemburg, bei der Krönung Heinrichs IV. von Frankreich und bei der Unterzeichnung des Ehevertrags von Johann dem Blinden anwesend.
