Malta ist ein südeuropäischer Inselstaat in der Meerenge zwischen Tunesien und Italien im Mittelmeer.Die Republik Malta umfasst die Inseln des Maltesischen Archipels, nämlich die drei bewohnten Inseln, Malta , Gozo und Comino , sowie die unbewohnten Kleinstinseln Cominotto , Filfla, St. Paul’s Islands und Fungus Rock . Politisch gliedert sich die Hauptinsel Malta in zwei Regionen mit fünf Bezirken. Gozo und Comino bilden zusammen die dritte Region und den sechsten Bezirk. Bei den Römern hieß die heutige Stadt Mdina Melita; dieser Name geht wahrscheinlich auf die punische Bezeichnung für einen Zufluchtsort, malet, zurück, was auch der Ursprung des heutigen Namens der Insel sein dürfte.
