Gaasterland liegt im Nationalen Landschaftsgebiet Südwestfriesland. Die Region ist, anders als das überwiegend flache Weidecharakter von Friesland, besonders hügelig und waldreich. Das Wort gaast (auch geist) deutet auf höher gelegene Sandflächen hin.
In der vorletzten Eiszeit (Saalien) entstanden durch den Druck des Gletschereises Kieslehmhügel entlang der Linie Texel-Wieringen-Gaasterland-Urk-Schokland-Vollenhove. Kieslehm ist eine Mischung aus Ton und Steinen, die unter dem Eispanzer gebildet wurde (Grundmoräne).
In der letzten Eiszeit (Weichselien) wurde durch den eisig kalten Wind eine dicke Schicht Decksand abgelagert.
Aufgrund der Sandverwehungen hat Staatsbosbeheer, wie auch andernorts in den Niederlanden, die Gegend um 1900 mit Wald bepflanzt.
Der höchste Punkt von Gaasterland liegt 12,70 Meter über NAP südwestlich von Oudemirdum am Rand des Jolderenbos (= Erlenwald).
