Der Lange Voorhout, so genannt, weil es ein Ausläufer (Vor-Wald oder Vor-Holz) des Haagse Waldes war, erhielt allmählich seine charakteristische L-Form.
Die erste Bebauung am Lange Voorhout erschien um den Anfang des 15. Jahrhunderts. Aus dieser Zeit stammt die heutige Kloosterkerk, eines der wenigen Überbleibsel des damals erbauten Klosters.
Im Goldenen Zeitalter war das Voorhout der Treffpunkt der Haagener 'beau monde', man flanierte dort. Auf Vorschlag von Prinz Maurits wurde versucht, einen Graben aus dem Lange Voorhout zu machen. Dies misslang, da das Lange Voorhout teilweise auf einer Sanddüne liegt.
