Le Lange Voorhout, ainsi nommé parce qu'il était une avancée (pré-bois ou pré-bois) du Bois de La Haye, a progressivement pris sa caractéristique forme en L.
Le premier bâtiment sur le Lange Voorhout est apparu vers le début du XVe siècle. C'est de cette époque que date l'actuelle Église du Couvent, l'un des rares vestiges du couvent construit à l'époque.
Au XVIIe siècle, le Voorhout est le lieu de rencontre du 'beau monde' de La Haye, où l'on flâne. Sur la proposition du prince Maurice, une tentative a été faite pour créer un canal à partir du Lange Voorhout. Cela a échoué car le Lange Voorhout est partiellement situé sur une colline de sable.
