Der gemütliche Kern Retranchement kann auf eine reiche Vergangenheit stolz sein. Prinz Maurits gründete das Dorf im siebzehnten Jahrhundert, das wörtlich 'Befestigung' oder 'Festung' bedeutet. Die Erdwälle und die alte Festung von Nassau sollten damals die Spanier fernhalten. Auch jetzt ist der Kern noch immer lebendig. Für den Vorsitzenden des Dorfrats Jurrien Kruidhof ist die Zusammengehörigkeit von Retranchement das größte Ass.
