Le noyau convivial de Retranchement peut se vanter d'un riche passé. Le prince Maurice a fondé le village au XVIIe siècle, qui signifie littéralement 'rempart' ou 'fort'. Les murs en terre et l'ancien fort de Nassau devaient alors tenir les Espagnols à l'écart. Aujourd'hui encore, le noyau est toujours vivant. Pour le président du conseil villageois Jurrien Kruidhof, la solidarité de Retranchement est le plus grand atout. 'Nous sommes tous là les uns pour les autres et nos associations renforcent notre sentiment communautaire.
