Die Vleeshal wurde zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts erbaut. Die Stadt benötigte eine Vleeshal, da die Stadtbevölkerung wuchs und damit die Nachfrage nach Fleisch. Die damalige Stadtverwaltung wollte ein reich dekoriertes Gebäude mit den schönsten Materialien. Hier hat der Stadtarchitekt Lieven de Key durch die Verwendung von viel Naturstein einen Beitrag geleistet.
Das Gebäude gehört zu den Beispielen des hollandischen Renaissance-Stils, was sich in den vielen auffälligen Ornamenten zeigt. Besonders auffallend sind die angebrachten Schaf- und Ochsenköpfe, die auf die ursprüngliche Funktion der Halle verweisen. Die Vleeshal ist jetzt die Außenstelle des Frans Hals Museums. Im Keller befindet sich das Archäologische Museum.
