In den Mergelgrotten des Sint-Pietersbergs wurde die Nachtwacht von Rembrandt während des Zweiten Weltkriegs versteckt. Sie war bereits an mehreren anderen Orten versteckt worden, wie in den Dünen bei Castricum und in der Burg Radboud in Medemblik. Im April 1942 wurde die Nachtwacht aus dem Staatslager in Heemskerk in die Dünen von Castricum in die Mergelgrotten gebracht. Am 25. Juni 1945 kam das Gemälde per Binnenboot zurück in Amsterdam.
