Archäologische Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass die Umgebung von Houten bereits in der Bronzezeit besiedelt war. Man fand hier auch die alte Limesstraße, die Grenze des Römischen Reiches in den Niederlanden, entlang des Alten Rheins. Die Limesstraße war die wichtigste Heerstraße, die von den Römern genutzt wurde, um die zahlreichen Castella entlang des Limes miteinander zu verbinden. Die Straße führte vom heutigen Deutschland bis nach Katwijk entlang des linken Rheinufer.
