Archaeological research showed that the area around Houten was already inhabited during the Bronze Age. The old Limes Road was also found here, the border of the Roman Empire in the Netherlands, along the Old Rhine. The Limes Road was the main highway used by the Romans to connect the many castella along the Limes. The road ran from present-day Germany all the way to Katwijk along the left bank of the Rhine.
