Es liegt an der Durchgangsstraße zwischen Leeuwarden und Dokkum. Im Jahr 2021 hatte das Dorf 620 Einwohner. Zum Dorf gehört auch die Gemeinde Zevenhuizen. Oudkerk ist das nördlichste Dorf der Region Trijnwouden. Es liegt auf Sandboden, im älteren Teil von Friesland. Der Oudkerkstervaart fließt in nordwestlicher Richtung nach Bartlehiem. Im Südwesten des Dorfes liegt der Oudkerkermeer. Etwas westlich davon steht die Oudkerkermolen, eine Poldermühle, die aus dem Jahr 1864 stammt. In der Nähe von Oudkerk befindet sich das Stins De Klinze.
