Rotterdam verfügt über eine Universität, mehrere Fachhochschulen, eine Musikhochschule und eine Kunstakademie. Sie ist die führende Industrie- und Handelsstadt der Niederlande. Auffällig ist die Rotterdamer Wolkenkratzer-Silhouette, die sich seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre entwickelt hat.
